While touring behind its recently released “Greatest Hits, Vol. 1,” Korn is already looking forward to its next studio project. According to guitarist James “Munky” Shaffer, the alternative metal act’s seventh album is slated for a late spring/early summer 2005 release.
“On Jan. 2, we’re going to go back and finish writing our next album,” Shaffer tells Billboard.com. “We have about four songs we’re trying to keep quiet, but you know how that type of s*** leaks [on the Internet], which is fine.
“It’s definitely more of a progressive [sounding] Korn,” he adds, declining to divulge any tentative song titles.
After including covers of Cameo’s “Word Up” and Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall, Parts 1, 2, 3” on its Epic/Immortal set “Greatest Hits, Vol. 1,” Shaffer hints the Bakersfield, Calif.-based five-piece is working on a covers EP, with a tentative title of “Korn Kovers,” for a possible April release.
“We threw out a lot of ideas and came up with a handful of cover songs that we recorded like Nine Inch Nails’ ‘Head Like a Hole’ and the Psychedelic Furs’ ‘Love My Way,’ Shaffer says. “And we really want to do Ozzy Osbourne’s ‘Diary of a Madman.'”
Released in October, “Greatest Hits, Vol. 1” debuted at No. 4 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 392,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. “Word Up” reached No. 17 on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks tally and No. 16 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, where “Another Brick in the Wall” is No. 19 this week.
Also in the works is a late winter/early spring live DVD release featuring footage mainly from this past summer’s Projekt Revolution Tour.
On the band’s current tour, which plays Trenton, N.J., tomorrow (Nov. 30), the band is digging deep into its catalog for such gems as “Make Believe” (from 2002’s “Untouchables”) and “4 U” and “Dirty” (from 1999’s “Issues”). Once the wraps this road trip in the middle of December, Shaffer hints fans won’t have to wait very long before the group returns on tour.
“We’re always on the road,” says Shaffer. “As soon as we finish the record, we’ll be back out. So, probably April or May, we’ll hit the road again and I think it will be more or less a world tour.”
