As she did last year, vocalist Kumi Koda (Avex) won three awards at this year’s edition of the MTV Video Music Awards Japan, which were presented May 26 at the Saitama Super Arena north of Tokyo.
Koda won in the best female video and best video of the year categories for “Yume no Uta (Dream Song),” as well as in the most stylish artist in a video category.
Male artist DJ Ozama (Toshiba-EMI) won the best male video and best dance video awards for “Age Age Every Kishi (Up Up Every Night),” Exile (Avex) copped the best group video award for “Lovers Again,” while female vocalist Ai Oktsuka (Avex) won in the best pop video category and best video from a film for “Ren’ai Shashin (Love Photograph),” which was used in the movie “Tada, Kimi wo Ai Shite-iru (But I Love You).”
The best rock video prize went to My Chemical Romance (Warner Music Japan) for “Welcome to the Black Parade,” while U2 and Green Day won the best collaboration video for “The Saints Are Coming.”
The show also feature live performances by Ohtsuka, Ozma, Daniel Powter and My Chemical Romance.
Winners were chosen by MTV viewers between January and May 2006. Any Japanese or international artist who released a CD in Japan between March 1, 2006, and Feb. 28, 2007, and also produced a music video was eligible to be nominated.
The show was broadcast live and will also be rebroadcast at various times over the next couple of weeks, while portions of the show will be available to MTV channels around the world.
