The world recently saw Kim Kardashian posting her nails on snapchat, where she showed off
lavender-greyish nails pierced with miniature gold hoops. But that’s not the first time pierced nails have made a cultural impact. Janet Jackson flaunted pierced nails way back in the 1998 music video for Busta Rhymes’ “What’s It Gonna Be?!”
Billboard spoke to celebrity manicurist Maria Salandra, whose manicure artistry has been seen on Rihanna, Iggy Azalea, Viola Davis, Sandra Bullock, and many more. Salandra tells Billboard that the trend started in the late ’80s, at the time when nail art in general was having a moment. Pierced nails she says then resurfaced in the mid-to-late 90’s.
“My feelings are if it makes you happy, then do more of it”, Salandra told Billboard of embracing the look. “Nail art is a direct creative expression of someone’s personality. Why should anyone live in a grey world?”
As for Jackson’s interpretation, in the video her nails are super long and pointy, and like Kardashian, individually pierced with hoops.
