The sentencing of Cyntoia Brown — a name that is now recognized as the woman behind bars for killing a man who allegedly solicited her for prostitution and sexually assaulted her as a teen — took place back in 2004, but thanks to social media, her case has recently gone viral and captured attention from outraged stars such as Rihanna, T.I., Snoop Dogg and Kim Kardashian. Now, the reality star is offering up her legal team to help free Brown.
The 29-year-old Tennessee woman was charged for murder as an adult at the age of 16, after admitting to shooting and killing a 43-year-old man who she says was using her as a sex slave. Brown was sentenced to 60 years, with 51 served before the possibility of parole.
Upon hearing the details of the unfortunate case, Kim Kardashian vowed to help in any way possible, tweeting “The system has failed. It’s heart breaking to see a young girl sex trafficked then when she has the courage to fight back is jailed for life! We have to do better & do what’s right. I’ve called my attorneys yesterday to see what can be done to fix this. #FreeCyntoiaBrown” on Tuesday (Nov. 21).
Along with Brown, Kardashian may also be looking to help 62-year-old Alice Johnson, a grandmother currently serving 21 years in prison for a first-time, non-violent drug offense. The Blast quotes Kardashian’s attorney Shawn Holley telling them that Kim “asked me to help her find a way to help these women. We have already contacted Alice Johnson and her team of lawyers who are now actively trying to find ways to facilitate her release.”
Holley is said to have a flawless criminal defense record and was even a part of Johnnie Cochran’s famed legal team that represented O.J. Simpson, revered among lawyers as “The Dream Team.” The Blast also reports that a conference call has been scheduled for Friday to begin discussions regarding Brown’s case.
