Kim Kardashian met Alice Marie Johnson face-to-face for the first time Wednesday (June 13), just one week after Johnson was freed from a life sentence in prison with Kardashian’s help.
The reality star flew to Mississippi to film their first joint interview with The Today Show‘s Hoda Kotb. In a preview posted on Twitter, the two discuss the moment they found out about Johnson’s commutation. Johnson was convicted in 1996 for a nonviolent drug offense.
When asked what Kardashian said to her on the phone, the 63-year-old great-grandmother said, “‘You can go home now, are you ready to go home?’ When she said that, I went into full-fledged Pentecostal holy dance.I started screaming and jumping.”
“I thought she knew because the news was starting to break and we had to get her on the phone,” Kardashian chimed in. “So, she was kind of quiet on the phone and I know her personality enough to know that she would’ve been screaming or something. And I said, ‘Wait, you don’t know?’ And she was like, ‘Know what?’ And I was like, ‘You’re going home.’ Screams and cries and we all cried on the phone.”
Kardashian got involved with the case last year after watching a clip of her sentencing. She took the issue all the way to the White House, and even met with Donald Trump in May to discuss prison reform.
The full interview will air on Thursday morning on NBC. See the clip below.
