EDM… It isn’t just for the club crowd anymore.
In a sign of beat-dropping times, Nickelodeon is adding a favorite DJ/EDM artist category to its Kids’ Choice Awards this year. Nominees in the category are Martin Garrix, Calvin Harris, Major Lazer, Skrillex, DJ Snake and Zedd.
The network is also introducing a second new music category, favorite music video. The clips nominated for the new award are “24K Magic” (Bruno Mars), “Can’t Stop The Feeling!” (Justin Timberlake), “Formation” (Beyoncé), “Juju On That Beat” (Zay Hilfigerrr and Zayion McCall), “Me Too” (Meghan Trainor) and “Stressed Out” (Twenty One Pilots).
Orange blimps will fly and slime will be flowing on Saturday, March 11. This year’s event, hosted by WWE superstar and actor John Cena, will be broadcast live on Nick beginning at 8pm.
The Chainsmokers, for one, are pretty pumped about being first-time nominees. “This has gotta be one of the coolest things ever!,” Alex Pall tells Billboard. “We grew up watching Nickelodeon religiously… Nick basically shaped who we are as goofballs, so to be nominated for favorite group and new artist is so cool. We may not be some boy band or whatever but it’s nice to know all the kids out there get down with us.”
The EDM duo joins Fifth Harmony, Maroon 5, OneRepublic, Pentatonix and Twenty One Pilots as nominees in the favorite music group category; and Kelsea Ballerini, Daya, Lukas Graham, Solange, Rae Sremmurd, Hailee Steinfeld and Twenty One Pilots compete for the favorite new artist blimp.
Steinfeld, also making her first KCA noms appearance, says, “I am so excited to be nominated for my first ever Kids’ Choice Award. It’s an incredible feeling to be recognized for my music. Thank you to everyone who supported ‘Starving’ this past year. Can’t wait for March 11.”
