Last night (July 7), on the breezy banks of the East River, Kid Cudi made a stop at the Williamsburg Waterfront in New York for ‘The Cud Life Tour.’ Before Cudi hit the stage, Chip tha Ripper opened the show with the Manhattan skyline as a backdrop.
Cudi raged through his catalogue, performing something for the recently recruited to his core fans. Cudi scatted through “The Prayer” for his “true fans” and treated the newer ones with a performance of Kanye’s West remix to “All of the Lights.”
When the energy felt to be waning, Cudi re-energized the crowd with a smooth mix of “Cudi Zone,” “Memories,” and the Crookers remix of his superhit “Day N’ Nite.” Kid Cudi slowed down the show twice to discuss his journey as an artist. He alluded to being one of the first artists who used the Internet to build a fan base, noting that “it was very unknown to find something new and refreshing online… it makes [me] feel like a dinosaur because that was the beginning of the whole underground rapper.”
The Cleveland native continued to discuss his run-in with the law in 2010, when arrested for criminal mischief and possession of a controlled substance. Cudi thanked the fans for always supporting him, telling them that “it means more than you will ever know.” The rapper seems to have found his zen, when he aptly told the mostly-teenage crowd that “there are no mistakes in life, no right or wrong, it’s all maintenance.”
Kid Cudi closed his set with “Pursuit of Happiness” and announced that the final installment of his ‘Man on the Moon’ trilogy would be out next Fall. “The Cud Life Tour” continues throughout the summer and will conclude at Lollapalooza in August.
