Khalid’s free spirit has carried the young Texan to the top of charts and, now, into the TIME 100 list.
The 21-year-old was honored Tuesday night (April 23) at the TIME 100 Gala in New York, where he strolled the red carpet and performed a set which included “Location,” “Talk,” and “Young Dumb and Broke.”
Earlier this month, the R&B artist’s sophomore set Free Spirit bowed atop the Billboard 200, eclipsing the No. 4 peak of his debut American Teen, from 2017.
During the Lincoln Center event, fellow TIME 100 honoree Taylor Swift admitted she was a “huge Khalid fan” and that, “if you haven’t listened to his new album Free Spirit, that’s a real loss. That’s a real missed opportunity.”
Khalid made this year’s list having been named by TIME in November 2017 as one of the Most Influential Teens of that year. He’s no longer that teen, but he’s matured into a “beautiful writer with the ability to take human concepts and make you understand and feel them,” Alicia Keys wrote in his TIME 100 profile. “He has a full, powerful voice that is somehow unassuming and smooth at the same time. He’s accessible—almost like you’ve met somebody like him before, although there’s nobody else like him.”
