Alicia Keys’ “As I Am” continues to dominate The Billboard 200, topping the chart for a third non-consecutive week. The J records album sold 61,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, a 14% sales drop from the week previous.
The Rhino soundtrack to “Juno” climbs a notch 3-2 despite a 15% decrease to 58,000; the movie also earned four Academy Award nods yesterday morning (Jan. 22). Mary J. Blige’s “Growing Pains” makes a similar move, ascending 4-3 with 52,000 (-19%). Slipping 2-4, Radiohead’s “In Rainbows” (TBD/ATO) moves 46,000 with a 33% hit.
Raheem DeVaughn, who recently nabbed a Grammy nomination for best male R&B vocal performance, climbs on board The Billboard 200 with “Love Behind the Melody” (Jive) at No. 5 (45,000). His previous album, 2005’s “The Love Experience,” topped out at No. 46 on The Billboard 200.
In its 65th week on the chart, Taylor Swift’s self-titled Big Machine record falls 5-6 with 34,000 (-2%). The concert set “Live From Philadelphia” from R&B singer John Legend debuts at No. 7 with 33,000. The album was only available at retail giant Target and Target.com and comes on the heels of his charting best, 2006’s “Once Again,” which bowed at No. 3 on the big chart.
The multi-label “NOW 26” hits collection continues its descent 6-8 with 30,000 (-9%), while Chris Brown’s “Exclusive” (Jive) slips 7-9 with 29,000 (-2%). Miley Cyrus’ Disney double-disc “Hannah Montana 2 (Soundtrack)/Meet Miley Cyrus” rounds out the top tier, climbing 15-10 with a 3% sales increase to 27,000.
Only four other new releases crack the top 100 slots on the chart this week. Veteran Canadian vocalist Anne Murray’s “Duets: Friends & Legends” (Manhattan) earns the artist her second best chart position at No. 42 with 13,000. Her 2000 set, “What a Wonderful World,” peaked at No. 38.
Indie troupe Magnetic Fields earns its highest Billboard 200 rank as “Distortion” (Nonesuch) bows at No. 77 with 8,000; the band’s only other album to chart here, 2004’s “i,” bowed at No. 152. Spice Girls’ “Greatest Hits” (Virgin) outsold Ringo Starr’s “Liverpool 8” (Capitol) by only a couple dozen copies at 7,000, so the albums start side-by-side at No. 93 and No. 94, respectively.
Sales this week are down 4% from last week to 6.98 million units and overall sales are down 9% from the same sum in 2007.
