Shortly after picking up gold and platinum designations from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for U.S. shipments of 500,000 and 1 million copies, respectively, Alicia Keys’ debut album, “Songs in A Minor” (J Records), has been certified double-platinum by the organization. Released on June 26, the set debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200, and was officially certified for U.S. shipments of 2 million copies on Aug. 8 by the RIAA.
“Songs in A Minor” is currently at No. 3 in its sixth week on the chart, and has actually sold more than 1.24 million copies in the U.S., according to SoundScan. Lead single “Fallin'” reached the top of The Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart this week after 10 weeks on each tally. The track has been No. 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart for four weeks running.
Joining Keys in the land of double-platinum discs is Lifehouse’s DreamWorks debut “No Name Face,” Vertical Horizon’s RCA set “Everything You Want,” and Neil Diamond’s 1992 holiday collection “The Christmas Album” (Columbia). Diamond’s 1987 live album “Hot August Night II,” also on Columbia, was certified platinum by the RIAA.
Other titles sporting newly minted platinum honors are “Thugs Are Us” by Slip N Slide/Atlantic rapper Trick Daddy, Bone Thugs ‘N’ Harmony’s 1998 set “The Collection: Volume One” (Epic), and Led Zeppelin’s 1997 Atlantic release “BBC Sessions.”
Additionally, Crosby, Stills & Nash’s self-titled Atlantic debut reached the four million U.S. copies shipped mark in its latest accounting. Originally released in 1969, the album includes some of the group’s most enduring songs, including “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,” “Wooden Ships,” and “Marrakesh Express.”
Among the titles receiving gold certification from the RIAA for U.S. shipments of 500,000 copies are the self-titled albums from Gorillaz (Virgin) and Aaliyah (Blackground), and the soundtrack to “South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut” (Atlantic).
Also notable is the gold certification, also for 500,000 U.S. copies shipped, for Mariah Carey’s “Loverboy” single. The single jumped 60-2 on The Billboard Hot 100 the week after it was released as a commercial single, with sales driven by a Virgin promotion offering the CD for a bargain-priced 49 cents. “Loverboy,” currently No. 9 in its ninth week on the chart, is the first single from Carey’s Virgin debut, “Glitter.”
As previously reported, the album was pushed back from its originally scheduled Aug. 21 release date to Sept. 11, while Twentieth Century Fox pushed back the U.S. opening of the film of the same name, which features Carey in her first starring role, to Sept. 21.
The moves came after the artist checked into a treatment facility to recover from an emotional and physical breakdown, said to have been brought on by a heavy work schedule. She has since left the facility, and is under a doctor’s care at an undisclosed location.
