Kenshi Yonezu‘s hit song “Lemon” has officially sold a combined total of 3 million units in CDs and downloads, making the J-pop hitmaker the first under-31 artist — meaning he was born during Japan’s Heisei imperial era, ending April 30 this year — to hit the milestone.
“Lemon,” the 2018 Billboard Japan Song of the Year, was released last year digitally Feb. 12 and in physical form March 14. As of the Japan chart dated April 8, 2019, the CD has sold 530,000 copies, and downloads have reached 2.49 million units, for a total of 3.02 million units combined.
The only other songs that have exceeded the 3 million mark in Billboard Japan chart history are veteran pop band Southern All Stars‘ “TSUNAMI” and former boy band SMAP‘s “Sekai ni Hitotsudake no Hana,” making “Lemon” the third single to join this prestigious club.
It’s also the first song released after Billboard Japan began tracking downloads in 2010 to accomplish this feat.
“Lemon” topped the Japan Hot 100 a year ago in April and stayed there for two weeks. After becoming a fixture in the top 10 for 39 weeks, it then reclaimed the top spot in January, where it stayed for five consecutive frames. It hasn’t fallen out of the top 10 for a whopping 60 weeks and is still going strong, charting at No. 4 on the latest chart dated April 15 (week of April 1 to 7).
