On Friday night (Feb. 15), Kelly Clarkson dropped jaws with her stunning cover of A Star Is Born’s smash hit, “Shallow.” Clarkson spoke to Forbes about the cover’s positive response in a recent interview, and the time Lady Gaga wrote her a handwritten letter.
“Well, we do covers every show and I’d been wanting to do that song ever since I heard it,” she said. “I thought it was really cool and it’s fun for the audience if they know the song.”
I know that sounds goofy, but I’m just a fan of what they do and I mean a good song is a good song, right,” she continued. “I will say it’s kind of nerve-wracking when you’re like, ‘Oh god, I hope they don’t hear this.’ If you didn’t like it.”
She also reminisced on a time back when Lady Gaga only had one single out, 2008’s “Just Dance.” The now superstar wrote her fellow pop chanteuse a handwritten letter, thanking Clarkson for sharing the stage together. “It was funny because nobody really knew her,” Clarkson remembered. “But I remember I was like, ‘Man, this chick can sing.’ I was hearing her backstage and then I came out and I noticed she was wearing bubbles. Like, she had just giant bubble-like things all over and I was like, ‘Oh, damn. She’s artsy.’ I was like, ‘She’s going to be a fun chick to watch,’ because she was all-in and I thought that that was really cool.”
“The same thing with Lady Gaga – was more of not like a thank you so much for opening,” she said of the handwritten letter. “It was like a, ‘Man, it’s so awesome to share the stage and thank you.’ It was just a really cool thing that nobody really does, especially in the email generation, nobody does handwritten letters. I thought it was just very cool.”
