After a year of an ongoing pandemic, social and political turmoil, it certainly feels like the apocalypse. That’s why Kelly Clarkson‘s cover of Julia Michaels and JP Saxe‘s “If the World Was Ending” feels more appropriate than ever.
The singer performed the emotional song for her talk show’s popular Kellyoke segment on Thursday (Feb. 11), where she stripped back the melody to just a piano accompaniment. Clarkson’s profound vocals matched the heartbroken lyrics, as she flawlessly hit every note.
Saxe and Michaels unveiled “If the World Was Ending” in early 2020, as the coronavirus began to spread. The duet spent 29 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 27 on the chart dated September 11, 2020.
