Psy-trance. Dubstep. Metal. Trap. A call to your mom. Kayzo and Subtronics’ collaboration “Braincase” has all this and more.
It’s a real genre-buster, a tongue-in-cheek patchwork of styles and rhythms with plenty of wonky mechanical noise to color it through. It’s fun-loving and non-sensical, but it totally clicks thanks to the deft work of the first-time collaborators.
“Working with Jesse was a rad experience,” Kayzo tells Billboard Dance. “He is as creative and outside the box work flow wise as i have come across, which i think attributed to us working together. Braincase is rock psy and bass all thrown together like paint on a canvas.”
Kayzo, aka Hayden Capuozzo, is well-known for his metal and punk influenced bass music. Subtronics, aka Jesse Karden, is likewise unafraid to mash dubstep and riddim with strange samples and other weird bits.
“It’s an honor to work with such a talented producer,” Subtronics adds. “I have looked up to Kayzo for his hard-hitting, four on the floor, mastery. As a low-key Psytrance fan since day one, I’ve always wanted to try it and ‘Braincase’ fit right in.”
You’ll definitely know the psytrance when you hear it, but what other influences can you pick from the pack? Listen to “Braincase” ahead of its full release this week, exclusive to Billboard Dance below.
