Katy Perry’s official music video for “Roar,” which premiered on Thursday afternoon (Sept. 5), finds the pop singer on a solitary adventure through jungle terrain, where she finds the “eye of the tiger” by… literally taming a wild tiger. Say farewell to the blue-wigged dreaminess of Perry’s “Teenage Dream” era, and welcome to the fierce, monkey-assisted “Prism” age.
The “Lost”-meets-“George of the Jungle” clip begins with a timid Perry staggering away from a plane crash; the Indiana Jones-esque dummy next to her takes a quick selfie before getting mauled by a tiger. Fortunately, the pop star is stronger than her male counterpart: she conjures a swarm of fireflies during the first chorus, and from there, she begins to dominate the wildlife around her. By the end of the “Roar” clip, Perry is painting an elephant’s nails, fashioning spears out of black heels and goofing around with a monkey. Was it all a dream? No spoilers here, of course.
The “Junglescope”-filmed music video premiere arrives one day after “Roar” dethroned Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” at the top of the Hot 100 chart, giving Perry her eighth career No. 1 on the tally. Only Mariah Carey (18), Madonna, Rihanna (12 each), Whitney Houston (11) and Janet Jackson (10) have more Hot 100 leaders among female soloists. “Blurred Lines,” featuring T.I. and Pharrell, spent 12 weeks at the top of the chart.

“Prism,” Perry’s third studio album and the follow-up to 2010’s “Teenage Dream,” is due out on Oct. 22. Perry first performed “Roar” at the finale of the MTV Video Music Awards on Aug. 25.
