On this week’s Hot 100 chart, Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse” (featuring Juicy J) slides up one spot to the chart’s summit, giving the pop star her ninth No. 1 single on the Hot 100. The latest achievement in a career checkered with ubiquitous hits like “I Kissed A Girl,” “Teenage Dream,” “Part Of Me” and “Roar,” Perry’s new No. 1 smash doubles as her least anticipated, according to its creator.
“This No. 1 is the most unexpected one I’ve ever had,” Perry told Billboard exclusively, after the song’s No. 1 chart ascent was confirmed. “‘Dark Horse’ has been a dark horse of a song, since August when the KatyCats voted to release it early on iTunes, before ‘PRISM’ even came out. I’m so thrilled and grateful to have these moments.”

But the singer really kicked it into high gear with her sophomore album, “Teenage Dream,” which tied the record set by Michael Jackson’s “Bad” album by spawning five No. 1 singles — “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” “Firework,” “E.T.” and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.).”
