Former Voice contestant Kat Perkins has released a tribute single for late singer Christina Grimmie and those effected in Orlando’s mass shooting on June 11.
Perkins and Grimmie were roommates during their time on season 6 of The Voice. Grimmie was fatally shot during a meet-and-greet June 10 at the Plaza Live in Orlando, Florida, by a crazed fan.
In the ballad “Angels,” Perkins sings: “There must be angels watching over you” and “21 guns, all fired at once/ In the coldest morning, of the longest month.” Proceeds from the song are set to go to the GoFundMe account created by Grimmie’s family and also to a scholarship fund set up by Grimmie’s family at the singer’s New Jersey high school.
“Christina was a beautiful person inside and out,” Perkins said in a statement to Rolling Stone. “I will miss her bubbly personality, quirkiness and talent. I wanted to honor her the only way I know how, with a song. Fly on, sister. This is a tribute to her and those lost the same weekend in the Orlando Shooting. May we find a way to move forward in life making peace while letting go of evil. #ChooseLove.”
