Kaskade sat down with Billboard Dance’s Matt Medved during Miami Music Week at SiriusXM’s “House of Chill,” where they chatted about his latest single, his busy performance schedule and how Brazilian music has been a strong influence on his music lately.
Speaking about “Cold as Stone,” his brand-new track featuring Charlotte Lawrence, the DJ/producer shared that it was a close friend of his who had suggested the collaboration, which was “just a shot in the dark” since Lawrence was an unsigned act Kaskade didn’t know of at the time. Now, he describes the 17-year-old as “an amazing young talent…that just blew me away when I first heard her sing and I’m really lucky to have her featured on this song.”
Kaskade calls the song a “step in a bit of a different direction, production-wise,” and says that “song-wise, it’s very much up my alley, another ballad talking about love. I’ve done a lot of that in my career. I tend to write about that or love songs that are talking about that.”
Kaskade also discusses his latest musical inspiration, revealing that having recently returned from a two-year run of shows in Brazil and regularly spending quite a bit of time there, he was drawn to a sound there that he describes as “bassy house, very raw, driven, it’s slower but very funky.”
“That sound, they’ve really kind of honed it [in Brazil] over this last year,” he explains. “And they’ve been doing it and LA’s got their version of it happening, so I feel like worlds are kind of colliding right now, but I really love it cause it speaks to that house music lover inside of me that I just naturally kind of go to, but it’s heavier and has a lot of energy, but it’s slow enough that it’s still got the funk and swing and I think it’s a fun thing.”
