When Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O announced plans for her first solo record June 25, she curiously didn’t share any new music. Well, here it is: A two-minute lo-fi acoustic dirge called “Rapt” that certainly coincides with Karen’s promise for a breakup album.
In the stirring video, Karen is underwater — motionless, yet apparently conscious — sinking to the depths in a red dress as the sun above fades from view. The clip was directed by Barney Clay (Karen’s husband) and production designed by K.K. Barrett, known for working Karen’s “psycho-opera” Stop the Virgens, which was staged at the 2011 Creators Project.

The harrowing track features lines like, “Do I really need another habit like you?”
It previews the album Crush Songs, which drops Sept. 9 via Cult, the imprint of Strokes’ frontman Julian Casablancas. Check out the album art below:

Crush Songs was recorded in 2006 and 2007 and is “an intimate collection of lo-fi, bedroom recordings in the vein of Karen’s Oscar-nominated ‘The Moon Song,'” a press release says.
Karen O was nominated for an Academy Award this year for “The Moon Song,” a Spike Jonze collaboration written for the film Her. Barrett — who worked on the above music video — was nominated for an Oscar in Best production Design for Her.
