
The announcement that Kanye West would be playing the closing ceremonies of Canada’s Pan Am Games has caused some grumbling among Canadians, who believe that the exhibition of national athletic pride should feature a homegrown artist, rather than Chicago’s West.

John Tory, the mayor of Toronto, though, saw no issue with the rapper’s closing slot, calling him a “proud product of our music industry” at a press conference Wednesday morning (July 15), according to a report from CTV News. It was only after reporters told him that West is not in fact a product of Canada’s music industry (perhaps he was thinking of Drake?) that Tory expressed his displeasure at the selection.

“I wish it’d been a Canadian. I also wish I’d known he wasn’t Canadian. But you can’t know everything,” the mayor wisely concluded.
