Kanye West’s candid interview during last week’s “Technology, Culture and Consumer Adoption: Learning To Read The Cultural Landscape” seminar at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity has finally arrived online in full. Watch Yeezus discuss the Beats-Apple deal, his interest in the fashion world and why he couldn’t back Jay Z’s partnership with Samsung:
On that last point, West assures the rap world that he has no beef with his mentor — in fact, Jay Z set the example to always work with the No. 1 creator in a given field. “The reason I said I didn’t like Samsung particularly is because throughout my entire life, because of the way my parents raised me, I have to work with the No. 1,” West explained. “I can’t work with anyone but Jay Z, because he’s the No. 1 blah, blah, blah. I can’t be with any girl but Kim, because that’s the girl I look at her pictures the most and get turned on by and she’s a nice person. I’m not going to represent any company but Louis Vuitton, because that’s No. 1. Samsung is not quite Apple, but it showed that Jimmy and Dre would be able to connect with the No. 1 influencers.”
On a panel that also included Translation founder Steve Stoute as well as Ben Horowitz, co-founder of venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, West talked about wanting to “change the idea of luxury,” the importance of Louis Vuitton and why Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine are “geniuses” in his eyes.
“What they had done for so many years, and they just connected with the right company, by the way,” West said. “It’s all about the legacy of Steve [Jobs]. They’ll be tech guys that come to me and be like Apple doesn’t have the biggest market share here but they have the right principles. If we start with the right principles, we go from there.”
In between high-profile cultural discussions, Kanye West has been headlining massive festivals — after rocking Bonnaroo earlier this month, the “Yeezus” star appeared at the top of the Life Is Beautiful lineup on Monday (June 23).
