Strong second week sales of Kanye West’s “Late Registration” and a resurgence by 50 Cent’s “The Massacre” deny the latest album by the Rolling Stones the No. 1 slot on The Billboard 200 this week. But the veteran rock act joins the hip-hop heavyweights as the only artists whose albums were able to move more than 100,000 copies.
Despite a 67% U.S. sales drop to 283,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan, West’s sophomore Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam album remains on top of the album chart. “Late Registration” includes the single “Gold Digger” featuring Jamie Foxx, which knocked Mariah Carey’s long-running Hot 100 No. 1 “We Belong Together” from the top of that chart last week, and has sold more than 1.14 million copies in just two weeks.
50 Cent’s “The Massacre” rebounds from No. 35 to move into the No. 2 slot in its 28th week on the tally, thanks to a 520% uptick in sales to 154,000. The Shady/Aftermath/Interscope disc was recently reissued with music videos for each of its 21 tracks. Upon its initial release in March, it debuted at No. 1 and has a to-date tally of nearly 4.5 million copies.
The Stones settle for a No. 3 entry for “A Bigger Bang” (Virgin), with first week sales of 129,000 copies. The band opened the North American leg of its world tour Aug. 21 in Boston and last night (Sept. 13) played New York’s Madison Square Garden. The group recently donated $1 million to the American Red Cross‘ Disaster Relief Fund to help those suffering in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
With less than a 1% drop to sales of 83,000, the Black Eyed Peas’ “Monkey Business” (A&M/Interscope) rebounds 6-4 on The Billboard 200, while Mariah Carey’s “The Emancipation of Mimi” (Island/Def Jam) sits tight at No. 5 with sales of 81,000 (-5%).
Tony Yayo’s “Thoughts of a Predictable Felon” (G-Unit/Interscope) slips to No. 6 from its No. 2 debut post on last week’s chart as sales slipped 67%. Right behind it is the 19th volume in the “NOW! That’s What I Call Music” (EMI Group/Universal/Sony BMG/Zomba/Capitol) compilation series, which holds at No. 7 with sales of 68,000 (-13%).
Green Day’s “American Idiot” rebounds 12-8 on an 11% boost to sales of 67,000, while the Hilary Duff compilation “Most Wanted” (Hollywood) falls 8-9 with 64,000 (-17%). The chart’s top 10 is rounded out by Young Jeezy’s “Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101,” which bounces back with an 11-10 move, despite a 3.5% drop to 62,000. The Corporate Thugz/Def Jam album debuted seven weeks ago at No. 2 on the tally and has sold 578,000 copies so far.
Besides the Stones, only three more new titles make their way onto the top half of The Billboard 200 this week: rapper AZ’s “A.W.O.L.” (Fastlife, No. 73), Sarah McLachlan’s “Bloom: Remix Album” (Nettwerk/Arista, No. 76) and Ryan Shupe & the Rubberband’s “Dream Big” (Capitol, No. 87).
Overall U.S. album sales were down 9% from the prior week at 9.5 million units and 16% from the same week last year. Sales for 2005 are behind 2004 by 9% at 421 million units.
