After displaying her songwriting chops by co-penning Miranda Lambert’s hit “Mama’s Broken Heart” (nominated for best country solo performance), Kacey Musgraves stepped into the spotlight with her debut single “Merry Go Round,” which peaked at No. 14 on the Hot Country Songs chart.

The combination of immediate hooks and sly storytelling that isn’t afraid to confront uncomfortable truths on “Merry Go Round” also carried the Texas native’s debut full-length, “Same Trailer Different Park,” to a No. 2 debut on the Billboard 200 chart upon its release through Mercury Nashville last March.
The remainder of the 25-year-old country artist’s year was composed of touring behind the 12-song collection — including an opening slot on Kenny Chesney’s summer tour — and crossing follow-up singles like “Blowin’ Smoke” and “Follow Your Arrow” over to pop audiences.
“ is hard to wrap my brain around, because there’s been so many pivotal moments,” Musgraves told Billboard last September. “I feel sometimes like I’m not even done being thankful for the amazing thing that happened to me a month ago — much less last week. There’s been so many things that have happened that it feels like overload — where do I begin to be thankful?”
“Follow Your Arrow,” which provoked discussion with its mentions of same-sex kisses and pot smoking, also earned Musgraves critical acclaim, and littered song-of-the-year lists at the end of 2014. Before snagging a best new artist nod, Musgraves claimed the new artist of the year trophy at the CMA Awards in November.
