In the quickly changing world of K-pop, K. Will has found himself atop of the K-Pop Hot 100 chart with his new single “Please Don’t” in only its third week on the chart. Originally featured as “must-see” video two weeks back, the accompanying visual to “Please Don’t” tells a story of unrequited love; a story that isn’t fully complete until the final ten seconds.
With three years since his last album, the folky hip-hop sounds of his newest track have captured everyone’s interest earning him a highly successful comeback with a K-Pop Hot 100 No. 1 under his belt.
“Ms. HyunA is back! She’s back!” shouts rapper Maboos at the beginning of HyunA’s comeback track “Ice Cream.” Following her appearance in PSY’s “Gangnam Style,” the 4Minute member became one of the most visual stars of K-pop giving her an excellent lead-in for a successful comeback. “Ice Cream” surges from No. 11 to No. 6 this week as official promotions began for her “MELTING” EP. The world agrees that “Ice Cream” is undoubtedly a must-see video this week as it racked up over 20 million views in just ten days; a pace faster than “Gangnam Style” for those keeping score.
Everyone loves a good love story. Solo female star Byul recently found herself back in the media spotlight upon her engagement and wedding to male solo star HaHa. The two are one of South Korea’s hottest newlyweds making earning her single a ton of attention. Watch Byul and HaHa’s love grow first-hand with adorable behind-the-scenes clips, their very public proposal, and Byul trying on wedding dresses, ending with a simple, tender embrace from the couple. With the media scrutiny, Byul’s new Colbie Caillat-esque track “So Cute” featuring rapper Kwon Jung Yeol earns this week’s biggest debut (No. 2).
Earlier this year, newcomer Ailee had a longstanding hit on her hands with debut single “Heaven.” The young singer, who was born and raised in the U.S., is proving to have another hit on her hands with new track “I Will Show You.” The track draws inspiration to Gloria Gaynor’s classic disco hit “I will Survive” with a piano-led introduction before moving into complete dance territory with Ailee showing off her impressive vocals. The video stays in line with the song’s progression with Ailee presented as a dorky reject who can’t win back the guy she loves. But once the drums and violins come in Ailee transforms into a sexy diva. “I Will Show You” falls just slightly from No. 3 to No. 4 this week.
Although Epik High’s pre-release track “It’s Cold” featuring Lee Hi reached the No. 1 spot, the group’s long-awaited proper single “UP” featuring 2NE1’s lead vocalist Park Bom was recently revealed. “UP” is a mash of classic rap, soaring pop vocals from Bom, and military-like chants. The video, which does not feature the 2NE1 beauty, shows the group and friends breakdancing and riding in a skateboard park in a DIY-like video. “UP” closes out the Top 20 falling from No. 8 in its second week.
