As the only K-pop act to have an admission and graduation system, After School ends 2014 saying goodbye to one of its original members Juyeon.
The singer announced her graduation from the girl group with a heartfelt message to fans, citing she’ll be facing new challenges soon. Recently, the 27-year-old has found success in acting (appearing in popular Korean dramas like 2010’s Smile Again, 2013’s Reply 1994 and is currently in a stage production of Man From Earth) and modeling (she is the current face of Japanese lingerie brand Maruko).
Juyeon’s record label, Pledis Entertainment, announced that there will be a graduation ceremony and fan meeting at a later date.
More Juyeon & After School
One of the original five members of After School that debuted in 2009, Juyeon is now the fourth girl to graduate from the act. While membership changes are nothing new in K-pop, After School has a built-in admission/graduation concept to seemingly avoid any awkwardness if a member looks to pursue other opportunities. Original group leader Kahi graduated from the group in 2012, but remained signed to Pledis as a solo artist. Jung-Ah, the current leader, is the only original remaining member while the other six girls were added throughout the years. There is no news of a new member being added.
While After School didn’t actively promote in Korea this year, the girl group dropped a new Japanese album and began promoting in China. The group’s most-recent single, 2013’s “First Love,” peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard K-Pop Hot 100.
After School ended their 2014 on a Chinese new-year show, performing “First Love” along with their 2010 hit “Bang!” Watch what very well may be Juyeon’s final performance with After School below:
