Before hitting the stage at New York’s Gramercy Theatre earlier this month, R&B singer Justine Skye performed her latest lovey-dovey jam “I’m Yours” for a special Billboard session at Joe’s Pub and discussed how the collaboration with Chicago rapper Vic Mensa came together.
The purple-haired songstress — whose hits include the Tyga-assisted “Collide” and “Bandit” — told Billboard how teaming up with Mensa made sense.
“It felt right. Vic is a new artist as well as I am,” she said of the track, penned by Roc Nation songwriter Joelle James. “I’ve been listening to his music before he super, super blew up.”
She also recalled how she first learned of their duet — through her mom. “I actually didn’t even know that he was getting on the song,” said Skye. “When you hear other artists embrace [your voice] on the song, it’s a great feeling. It lets you know it’s really real.”
Watch her rock the stage at Joe’s Pub for a live rendition of “I’m Yours” below.
