Yesterday Justin Timberlake wrapped up his week-long residency as guest performer on” Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.” During the four days prior, Justin’s sat on the couch to chat about his (cooked) beef with Kanye West, brought sexy back as part of a barbershop quartet, and performed cuts like “Strawberry Bubblegum” and “Mirrors” from his forthcoming album “The 20/20 Experience.”
But they’d yet to give the fans what they’ve really been anticipating: the fourth edition of their “History of Rap” series. Well, last night they finally gave it a go—but only after cautiously discussing whether or not they should risk tarnishing the legacy of their beloved trilogy. “We shouldn’t,” Fallon warned. “We wouldn’t,” Timberlake responded, as the audience screamed that they should. And with that, they took a collective breath, grabbed their mics and headed to the stage.
They began with The Sugar Hill Gang’s 1981 cut “Apache,” then skated through the ‘80s with Run-D.M.C.’s “It’ s Tricky” and Slick Rick’s “Children Story,” covering an eye for the artist who rocked a patch. For the ‘90s they played Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre for “Gin & Juice” and The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Hypnotize” amongst others. Then when they got to the 2000s, 50 Cent’s “P.I.M.P.,” Eminem’s “Lose Yourself,” Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow” and even Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “Thrift Shop” made it. Watch it below:
When it came time for Timberlake’s finale Fallon Week performance, he again opted to take a trip to the past, treating fans to his old hits “Like I Love You,” “Cry Me a River” and “Senorita.”
