Justin Timberlake has revealed the title and 10 seconds of a new song — dare we say, a new single? — that will appear on the rapidly forthcoming sequel to his third album, “The 20/20 Experience.”
In a 45-second video posted to YouTube on Wednesday (July 10), Timberlake hops out of a convertible holding a few white signs in his right hand. The signs list the various unveiling dates of JT’s 2013 releases — “Suit & Tie January 14th,” “Mirrors February 11th” and “The 20/20 Experience March 19th.” The next card reads “Take Back The Night,” and the following sign presumably reveals its release date — but it’s blurred out! Justin, you rascal!
Timberlake then high-tails it into the adjacent club, and for 10 seconds, fans can hear the superstar fully embrace the influence of “Off The Wall”-era Michael Jackson. Over a sleek, rhythmic pop production, JT invites his lyrical subject to “use me up until there’s nothing left.”
Finally, a message at the end of the clip reads, “The 20/20 Experience Continues…” But when, Justin? Who are we taking back the night from, exactly? And when does the most deliriously dance-worthy track you’ll release in 2013 officially arrive at fans’ eardrums?
The timing for the cagey announcement is a bit dubious — if “Take Back The Night” is indeed a new single, it will blow by “Tunnel Vision,” which was bestowed with a controversial music video last week but has not yet been promoted to radio as the third official single from “The 20/20 Experience.” “Suit & Tie” and “Mirrors” both reached the Top 5 of the Hot 100 chart as official singles.
Part two of”The 20/20 Experience” is due in September, right after Timberlake wraps up his Legends of the Summer tour alongside Jay-Z in mid-August. “The 20/20 Experience” is 2013’s biggest-selling album thus far, moving 2 million copies by the midway point of the year, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
