Thus far, the releases from Justin Timberlake’s upcoming album Man of the Woods have been lacking the name’s rustic implications. He’s given fans the Pharrell-produced “Supplies,” and the futuristic “Filthy,” but today JT dropped the first single that seems to truly live up to the album’s woodsy name.
The latest song to drop is “Say Something,” the Chris Stapleton collaboration that features more guitar than any of the last two advance tracks. The video starts with Justin Timberlake hunched over a computer, looping a beat before heading over to Stapleton, who adds the guitar chords on top.
The rest of the song is an upbeat and soulful vocal-heavy ballad with Stapleton and Timberlake building over one another, each equipped with a guitar, as they sing, “Maybe I’m looking for something I can’t have.” The song hits its climax as the two are joined by a full choir, and added band, and then slowly comes down off itself with the line, “maybe it’s greatest to say nothing.”
Man of the Woods will drop in full on Feb. 2, just two days before Timberlake performs at halftime of Super Bowl LII.
