Justin Timberlake has unveiled the lead single to Part 2 of “The 20/20 Experience,” as the full audio of “Take Back The Night” was posted to YouTube on Friday (July 12) at noon ET.
As previewed in a 10-second snippet included in a teaser video released on Wednesday, “Take Back The Night” nods to “Off The Wall”-era Michael Jackson, with horn stabs, thumping bass, a dizzyingly light hook and little lyrical purpose aside from provoking its listener to move. “Attraction drives you crazy,” Timberlake croons, “and the way you move when you go crazy — that’s incentive for me.” At over six minutes, the single is another extended jam from JT and his partner-in-crime Timbaland, serving as a souped-up version of the “20/20 Experience’s” most straightforward dance cut, “Let The Groove Get In.”
Produced by Timberlake, Timbaland and Jerome “J-Roc” Harmon, “Take Back The Night” is being offered as a free download with a pre-order of the second installment of “The 20/20 Experience,” due out on Sept. 30 on RCA Records. The forthcoming album will act as a bookend to the first portion of “The 20/20 Experience,” Timberlake’s third solo album, which was released in March and is 2013’s best-selling album thus far.
According to a press release, Part 2 will feature 11 tracks, as well as a “special surprise” from JT. “I originally recorded a massive amount of material and decided on the 20 tracks that I wanted on the album over a year ago,” Timberlake says in a statement. “But, when I was mixing and going through all of the songs there were so many that I loved – I couldn’t resist… I had to throw in something extra on the 2nd half.”
Timberlake’s “Legends of the Summer” tour with Jay-Z kicks off on July 17 in Toronto, with a headlining trek to follow this fall. A controversial music video for “Tunnel Vision,” from the first “20/20 Experience” release, was unveiled last week, but the song has not been pushed to radio as a third official single from the album. “Suit & Tie” and “Mirrors” both reached the Top 5 of the Hot 100 chart earlier this year.
