… Rick Astley? Gotcha! You’ve just been rickrolled.
Long before the Biebs and 1D ever sang a note, this signature hit ruled. 25 years ago today, on Dec. 19, 1987, Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” debuted on the Hot 100. The song, which has been rickrolling the nation ever since, spent two weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100 in 1988 — it was Astley’s first No. 1 hit.
His follow-up single, “Together Forever,” also reached No. 1, in June 1988. Astley added three more top 10 Hot 100 hits in the next few years, before being forever immortalized as an Internet meme (and occasional Thanksgiving Day parade prankster).
