French electro-rock duo Justice was in New York last night (Oct. 30) for the premiere of “A Cross the Universe,” a relentlessly nihilistic documentary that follows the band on its spring 2008 tour.
Taking the Frenchman-travels-America genre pioneered by Alexis de Tocqueville and continued by Bernard-Henri Levy to new levels of debauchery, “Universe” finds Gaspard Auge and Xavier de Rosnay, along with tour manager Bouchon and a cast of others, partying their way across the country.
The film has no real plot, just a series of scenes of Justice cavorting with half-naked women, roaming around mansions in the Hollywood Hills and playing to adoring crowds.
Bouchon also takes advantage of America’s comparatively lax gun laws, roaming around with a shotgun tucked in his pants, taking the band to shooting ranges and eventually getting arrested for bringing his weapon to a restaurant.
With all the lunacy that happened in the short period of time while the movie was shot, it’s no surprise Justice are planning on taking it easier in 2009.
“We’re going to release a live disc along with the documentary, and then have a rest,” de Rosnay tells Billboard. “We played 150 shows in one year, and it was a big production. When we DJ, it’s easier, but for our live show we have a 12-person crew and it costs quite a bit of money.”
“We’ll start on something new when we have an idea,” he adds. “We don’t want to force anything.”
Meanwhile, Justice will headline tonight’s HARD Halloween Party in Los Angeles, along with Soulwax, Simian Mobile Disco, Deadmau5, Boys Noize, Crookers, Crystal Castles, Jason Bentley, Destructo and more.
