The French are a funny bunch. With subtle senses of humor, you can’t always be sure when they’re messing with you or giving you deep insight — usually it’s a little bit of both.
In a recent on-camera interview with France’s CSTAR, leather-clad duo Justice were asked to do a rapid-fire “This or That” segment. They couldn’t choose between rock or hip-hop, but when asked which fellow Frenchmen they preferred; Vitalic or David Guetta, the answer was a bit blurrier.
“Vitalic,” Justice’s Xavier de Rosnay says, then he backtracks and says that it’s hard to say, because David Guetta releases “very good” music under a false name. The interview cuts there, as if nothing interesting has just been shared.
David Guetta, one the biggest producer-DJs in the world, arguably cleared the road for fellow dance artists like Calvin Harris and Avicii to reach mainstream radio in the United States with crossover hits like “Sexy Bitch” and Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling.” His shiny pop sound stands in contrast to earlier classic house-inspired recordings. Is Guetta holding out on secret sauce? Either way, he’s made a ton of money.
