With four nods each, Juanes and Tokio Hotel were the big winners at the Los Premios MTV Latin America 2008 awards, which took place Oct. 16 in Guadalajara, Mexico. The seventh annual awards ceremony, which aired live from the Telmex Auditorium, celebrated MTV’s 15th anniversary in Latin America.
Juanes won artist of the year, best solo artist, best rock artist and best artist – central, while Tokio Hotel won song of the year, best ringtone category for its song “Monsoon,” best new international artist award and best fanclub.
Following in number of awards, with two each, were techno pop band Belanova and Chilean youth group Kudai. The Legends award was given to Argentine rockers Los Fabulosos Cadillacs who will release a new album and launch a tour this year.
Performers for the evening included Metallica, Julieta Venegas, Tokio Hotel, pop rockers Paramore, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Kate Perry, Juanes and Belanova.
The winners of Los Premios MTV were selected by a record 12.5 million voters who cast votes online and via mobile text messaging.
