JOYRYDE is one of the most hands-on artists in dance music. He masterminded his post-apocalyptic, junkyard come to life C.A.R. stage production, and now, he unveils “the heaviest video” of his career.
“New Breed” is a deep, dark, bass-riddled house tune featuring bars from rapper Darnell Williams, from the recent HOWSLA compilation, which saw Skrillex and his buddy Chris Lake challenge OWSLA artists to craft a new, futuristic sound for the funky genre. The video was written, directed and edited by JOYRYDE. It turns the usual hip-hop gangster trope on its head, like when the video vixen turns out to be a satanic slave, and other oddities.
“I had this idea at the end of 2016,” JOYRYDE says in an emailed statement. “Me and Sonny [Skrillex] were thinking about writing around it, but did not pick it up again, and then he told me about the HOWSLA release and how it’s gonna be about just dope rough cut records. I felt if I’m gonna be on a house-based EP, I want something totally different from my shit and the others.
“The moment we got Darnell on the record, it got mean and twisted,” he continues. “I love it. Darnell is a G, serious vocalist and actor.”
