Since Trevor Noah was announced as Jon Stewart‘s replacement on The Daily Show last week, there has been some backlash regarding tweets the 31-year-old comedian posted online. While the comedian has addressed the issue, his predecessor, Jon Stewart, is now coming to his defense.
When Stewart took to the anchor desk on Monday night’s The Daily Show, he had a message for his viewers regarding Noah.
“I’m very excited about it. And I will say I know there was a large kerfuffle on Twitter, but I can say this, I think without hesitation Trevor Noah will earn your trust and respect. Or not,” he told the audience. “Just as I earned your trust and respect, or did not. Or sometimes earned it and then lost it and then kind of got it back but it was like ‘f— that guy’… The only thing I would say is I do hope you give him an opportunity to earn that trust and respect.”
Stewart went on to describe the comedian, who joined the show back in January, as “incredibly thoughtful, considerate, funny and smart individual and man I think you give him that time and it’s going to be well worth it.”
