Jon Batiste stopped to chat with Billboard’s Chelsea Briggs on the red carpet at the 2019 MusiCares Person of the Year Gala on Friday (Feb. 8), where they discussed his appreciation for Dolly Parton, his performance later that evening with Leon Bridges and Mavis Staples and his mantra for 2019.
Asked how it feels to be a part of a night celebrating Parton, Batiste tells Briggs that he appreciates the music icon because she is an “authentic artist” and that her music is “representative of so much love.”
Regarding his performance of “Not Enough” later on that night with Leon Bridges and Mavis Staples, Batiste notes that he loves having fun and sharing music with other people.
“There’s nothing like that in the world,” he adds. “So I just want to get up there and really represent Dolly’s music and just share something with the people that they won’t forget.”
In the interview, Briggs also asks Batiste what quote he plans to live by in 2019, to which he reveals that his mantra is “don’t stop.”
“I wrote a song called ‘Don’t Stop,’ but that’s also my mantra, don’t stop,” he explains. “Because when you’re continuing down your path, there’s things that will come, but you can’t back down. You just gotta keep moving.”
