Smile! The leader on this week’s Billboard Japan Hot 100 is “smile” by Twenty-Twenty, a COVID-19 charity project consisting of 75 artists from all 15 boy bands belonging to the J-pop talent agency Johnny’s.
The song written by veteran pop band Mr. Children’s Kazutoshi Sakurai sold 430,038 copies to lead physical sales and look-ups, taking the top spot on the chart methodology for the week dated Aug. 10 to 16. “smile” debuted at No. 5 on the Japan Hot 100 back in June when it was released digitally, leading downloads for that week with 68,971 units.
The race between YOASOBI’s “Yoru ni kakeru” (9,768,877 streams) and Kenshi Yonezu’s “Kanden” (9,538,402 streams) was a close one. On downloads, “Kanden” had the edge (27,875 units for No. 2) over “Yoru ni kakeru” (20,767 units for No. 4). Overall, Yonezu is gradually closing in on YOASOBI’s long-running hit, but it could take a while for the “Lemon” hitmaker to overtake the rising pop duo, as the music video for “Yoru ni kakeru” currently leads video views with over twice the views as “Kanden,” the song at No. 2.
The Billboard Japan Hot 100 combines physical and digital sales, radio airplay, Twitter mentions, YouTube and GYAO! video views, Gracenote look-ups, audio streams from Amazon Music Unlimited, Apple Music, AWA, Google Play Music, KKBOX, LINE MUSIC, Rakuten Music, RecMusic provided by Gfk Japan, dHits, Uta Pass and Spotify, plus karaoke data from Daiichikosho and XING.
