Here’s one you didn’t see coming. Johnny Marr will release a cover of Depeche Mode’s raunchy 1993 track “I Feel You” for Record Store Day.
The British guitarist and singer’s recording will be distributed as a 7″ for the annual record store promotion, which takes place April 18. The B-side will be a live performance of the Smiths‘ “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want,” which originally appeared on the flip side to 1984’s “William, It Was Really Nothing”.

There was a time in the 1980s when the Smiths and Depeche Mode shared airtime and space on countless teenagers’ bedroom walls.
Marr has been a prolific collaborator since the Smiths’ 1987 split, working on various projects with Neil Finn, recording with The The, Modest Mouse and the Cribs and he has led the Healers. He finally got round to releasing his first debut album The Messenger in 2013. A follow-up Playland arrived last year.

“I Feel You” was the opening track from Depeche Mode’s outstanding 1993 album Songs of Faith and Devotion, which became the British act’s first studio set to top the U.S. and U.K. albums charts. Behind the scenes, the album was tortuous to record, in part due to singer Dave Gahan’s escalating heroin addiction.
