Advice from John Mayer: never come for Oprah Winfrey. On Friday (April 5), the singer issued a hilarious response to the talk show host’s swift takedown of a fan in the comments section of her personal Instagram account.
It all started Thursday (April 4) when Oprah posted a touching photo of herself and Maya Angelou to honor what would have been the late civil rights icon’s 91st birthday. In the comments of the photo, one ill-advised fan attempted to scold Oprah for addressing Ms. Angelou by her first name, writing, “Ms. Angelou to you Oprah. You have no license to call her Maya. She will always be Ms. Angelou.”
Oprah took notice of the jab and graciously corrected the fan. “She actually gave me permission after the 2nd or 3rd visit to her home to call her ‘Maya.’ Believe me, I’ve witnessed when other folk did NOT have that permission!”
Mayer couldn’t get enough of the drama and jumped in with a complex burn of his own.
“When Oprah claps back – look down,” he wrote. One of her hands is your face. Now look in the mirror. That’s right; you have seven Oprah hands for a face. You’re tripping. This is due to the dusting of neurotoxins from the clap. You will wake up at the job you had in high school, but at the age you are today. In your pocket you will find a note that says ‘do better.’”
While he hasn’t released an album since 2017’s The Search For Everything, Mayer has been slowly rolling out new music, most recently with one-off single “I Guess I Just Feel Like.”
