John Mayer knows he had an ego problem — but he’s got it under control now.
That was the singer’s message during an MSNBC interview that aired in part on the Today show Friday morning (March 6). Mayer explained to interviewer Ronan Farrow why he tried to stay away from the spotlight. “I’m a recovered ego addict, and the only way that I can be sure that I don’t relapse is to admit that I constantly have this ego addiction, every day. So I do the Grammys and I go home because if I stay, I get high again.”

Referencing his kiss-and-tell past with exes like Jennifer Aniston and Jessica “Sexual Napalm” Simpson, Mayer shared that he knew the revealing interviews weren’t a good look. “I went, ‘All right, dude, you did a couple interviews where you were out of touch and you were being a ham — and you were basically break dancing into a nitroglycerin plant, right?'”
As to the future, Mayer shared that his limited social-media use is meant to help keep his ego in check — and keep the focus on his music.
