John Brown’s Body is celebrating 20 years of reggae bliss with their new studio release Fireflies in September, but Billboard is giving a taste of the album with the exclusive release of “New Fashion” today.
The single is the first track available off the upcoming album. “New Fashion” is one of 10 tracks from Fireflies, dropping Sept. 9. The song embodies the growth of the band over the past 20 years, showing a mixture of old and new.
“It’s a song about nostalgia and looking forward at the same time. There’s a ton of references to old songs and dances; Lots of words and phrases from 80’s dance hall songs. It’s hoping for peaceful fun in the dance, and a wish to bring some of the old-style good vibes to the modern listener,” says lead vocalist Elliot Martin.
“New Fashion” is a feel good-song that comes during troubled times. With lyrics like “Pray everybody gonna rise/When they hear the bassline/And it’s right on time/So show your loving when you hear the dubwise/In the new style” and “Water pumping when the peaceful/Lovers rocking people come through,” the single was made for fans looking for peace of mind.
John Brown’s Body is currently touring the U.S. with their next performance scheduled for tonight (July 15) at Beachcomber in Wellfleet, MA. The reggae group will begin their Fireflies Release Tour on Sept. 9 at the Black Swamp Arts Festival in Ohio.
