Universal Music Publishing Group chairman/ceo Jody Gerson caught up with Billboard on the red carpet at the 2020 Billboard Power Event on Thursday (Jan. 23), chatting about how it feels to be named Executive of the Year, which industry changes she is excited to pursue in 2020, and which artists she is especially proud of at the moment.
Asked what being named Executive of the Year means to her, Gerson says that it feels “amazing” to be recognized by Billboard, and that having grown up admiring the people who are on the Power List, she is very proud and touched to be topping it.
Posed with the question of which changes in the music business she is most excited about in 2020, Gerson replies that she wants to continue to support artists, and that transparency in business is also very important.
“I see lots of opportunity,” she adds. “I see opportunity for executives, I see opportunity for entrepreneurs, and I see tremendous opportunity for artists. So I think that’s exciting.”
In the interview, Gerson is also asked which artists she is especially proud of this year, to which she names Billie Eilish, Rosalía, Lizzo, and Shawn Mendes as some of the “tremendous, great talent” she is currently really excited about.
