Joan Jett was scheduled to perform during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade later this month — and that’ll still happen, albeit on a different float.
The singer was slated to perform during the annual parade in New York on a float representing South Dakota, but after protests from South Dakotan ranchers, who say the rocker’s a vegetarian and critic of their trade, she’ll instead take her talents elsewhere, CNN reports.
“I’ve decided to switch from South Dakota to another float because people’s political agendas were getting in the way of what should be a purely entertainment driven event,” Jett said Saturday. “I will remain focused on entertaining the millions of people watching, who will be celebrating a great American tradition.”
Jett is an outspoken supporter of PETA, appearing in print ads for the animal rights group.
“When we learned that about Miss Jett, we were rightly concerned about her representing South Dakota and a state that is so heavily reliant on agriculture and livestock production to drive our economy,” the South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association’s Jodiae Anderson said in a statement.
The float to which Jett has moved has not been announced. Another performer — also unannounced — will take her place on the South Dakota float.
