Modern rock act Jimmy Eat World is about to begin recording its next album at its own studio in Tempe, Ariz. The set will be produced by Butch Vig, marking his first stint behind the boards with another band since Garbage went on hiatus last year.
In a post on the group’s Web site, drummer Zach Lind said 17 songs are in the pipeline, including “Big Casino,” “Be Sensible,” “Firefight,” and “Electable.” Vig is being brought in to make “sure we don’t forget to thrash unreal!!,” he wrote.
According to a spokesperson, there’s no release date in the offing just yet for the album, which will be the follow-up to 2004’s “Futures.” That album debuted at a career-best No. 6 on The Billboard 200 and has sold nearly 599,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Jimmy Eat World will play a handful of gigs next month, beginning with an Aug. 4 benefit at Tempe’s Marquee club for Nita’s Hideaway owner Mark Covert, who is in need of a liver transplant. Also on tap is an Aug. 26 show at the Del Mar (Calif.) Race Track and four festival gigs in Austria, Switzerland and Germany through early September.
