Jimmy Cliff Title: Sacred Fire | Release Date: April |
The first new recordings since 2004 from the reggae legend and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer sprang from Jimmy Cliff ( @thejimmycliff) being managed by the Collective. Last fall, Tom ” Grover” Bierney, who heads Collective Recordings, signed Cliff to the Sony RED-distributed label and connected him with producer and Rancid frontman Tim Armstrong. The result was the “Sacred Fire” EP, a collection of covers and new material that topped Billboard’s reggae chart when it was released late last year. For the new album, tentatively due in April, Cliff and Armstrong wrote many of the songs at Hollywood’s Sound Factory studio. Cliff also rewrote/rerecorded his anti-war classic “Vietnam” as “Afghanistan” with a band of more than a dozen musicians and singers, capturing the energy of his ’70s work. Bierney says, “We talked about how to go backward in order to go forward.”
