Clad in a curve-hugging black dress, Jill Scott – backed by a five-piece band and three female singers – wowed a jam-packed Playhouse in Hollywood (April 18) as she performed several tracks from the summer-slated set. In attendance were singers Lalah Hathaway, Macy Gray and Rahsaan Patterson. Among the songs eliciting high marks from the audience: the uptempo “Boom,” described by Scott as a track “that came out of a freestyle and we kept it the way it came out”; “Rolling Hills” (saluting the power a woman possesses that goes beyond her physical form) and new single “So in Love” featuring Anthony Hamilton, who joined her onstage. In an added blast to the past, she threw in “The Way.”

Though it’s been a minute since Scott released a new album, the singer/songwriter showed she’s lost none of her lyrical prowess or frankness. On “So Gone” she talks about a “diamond chip dick”; on “Quick” she sings, “I thought we had magic but it’s over. Quick. Gave me a son. Can’t believe it’s over. So quick.” Noted Scott at the end of her mini-concert/revival meeting: “Pay attention to the lyrics. This is a grown-ass woman talking; that’s the kind of artist I am. I don’t hold back. When you listen sisters, you’ll hear yourselves. And brothers, maybe you’ll learn a little more insight about us. We should all appreciate the all of us., That’s what’s in this record.”
“So In Love” is Jill’s highest debut in her 11-year chart history on Billboard’s Adult R&B chart. Her previous best opening was “Golden” which opened at No. 26 in the June 26, 2004, issue.
Scott will be in New York tonight (April 20) to host the East Coast version of her invite-only, live preview of songs from her forthcoming Blues Babe/Warner Bros. debut album, “The Light of the Sun.”
