After making her feature film acting debut in Ang Lee’s “Ride With the Devil,” singer/songwriter Jewel is now readying a follow-up. The artist will star in “Wave,” an independent film project she is developing and producing through her Gravitas Entertainment alongside Goldie Hawn’s Clearlight Prods., a division of Cosmic Entertainment.
Written by David Rothmiller, the project is about a mother reconnecting with her adult son after spending time in jail for a crime of passion committed when he was a child. Jewel will take on the supporting role of the son’s girlfriend.
Gravitas — a production company created by Jewel and her mother and manager, Lenedra Carroll — acquired the script and brought it to Cosmic. Cosmic is in the process of securing financing for the film.
“Wave” reunites Rothmiller with Jewel as the former was a co-producer of the singer’s “Jewel: Live in Concert,” which aired on DirecTV. Cosmic is headed by Hawn, Kurt Russell, Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson, each of whom has his or her own company underneath the Cosmic banner.
As previously reported, Jewel will kick off a North American tour Sept. 19 in North Charleston, S.C., in support of her latest Atlantic album, “0304.”
