Jennifer Lopez stunned the crowd in Miami during the halftime show at Super Bowl LIV on Sunday (Feb. 2) when she strutted onto the stage in a custom bodysuit and an eye-popping red, white and blue coat that was revealed to be in the shape of a Puerto Rican flag.
While the coat made a loud fashion statement, animal rights group PETA was not as impressed, calling out the “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” singer for what they said was an unnecessarily cruel fashion choice.
“This flag could have flown without killing birds,” read a tweet from PETA. “Dozens of birds were KILLED for this #SuperBowl #PepsiHalfTime performance.” The tweet also included side-by-side images of a triumphant Lopez spreading the flag coat’s arms out next to an image of dead, plucked birds hanging on hooks in a processing plant.

According to an Instagram post from one of the singer’s SB stylists, Mariel Haenn, Lopez’s feather coat was custom-made by Versace and featured 40,000 red, blue and white feathers “all individually sewn in.”
The official Versace Instagram account also wrote, “The monumental banner depicts the United States of America’s stars and stripes on one side, and Puerto Rico’s flag on the other. All feathers used for the flag were sourced ethically.”
Lopez and Shakira performed a high-energy routine during halftime at Sunday’s game that included a run through their biggest hits as well as a subtle statement about the immigration crisis at the U.S. Southern border.
A spokesperson for Lopez could not be reached for comment on PETA’s post at press time.
