Jennifer Hudson has spoken for the first time about her upcoming gig on the Voice coaching staff, and issued a warning to her on-screen opponents Blake Shelton and Adam Levine: “look out.”
Speaking on Late Night With Seth Meyers, the Oscar and Grammy winning singer brazenly warned her fellow Voice coaches she wasn’t there to make up numbers.
“Look out Blake and Adam,” she quipped. “I’m watching them so that Team JHud can be ready, because when I come I come to win. They’ve gotta be ready.”
The American Idol alum has signed on for season 13 of the NBC talent quest, joining Miley Cyrus, Levine, Shelton and host Carson Daly.
When the announcement was made, Hudson turned into an emotional mess. “When the news came out I literally cried, it’s like, ‘I need a moment,’” she told Meyers. “For me to come from a place like that, where once I was a contestant and then who would’ve ever thought that I would be a coach, and the chair’s turning around for other hopefuls. So for me…I was very emotional about it.”
Hudson became a household name when she competed on the third season of Idol in 2004. Though her run was surprisingly cut short in week seven, she went onto sign with Arista Records and claim an Oscar for her performance as Effie White in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical Dreamgirls. She has bagged two Grammys and each of her three albums have reached the top 10 of the Billboard 200.
